Berlin girls basketball coach Sheila King got her 300th win last Wednesday in a 66-34 win over Platt.

King, who is in her 21st year coaching the girls basketball team, has a 300-179 record and has been a coach of various sports at Berlin High since 1983.

“It was very nice,” King said. “It meant a lot to me. My whole family was there; they had a big banner.”

Berlin is 12-4 but King wasn’t so sure how the season was going to go early on when the Redcoats lost two of their first three games.

“We started off 1-2 but we picked it up from there,” she said. “To the kids’ credit, they fought back.”

Berlin lost early to Bristol Central and Bristol Eastern and also has losses to two-time state champion Northwest Catholic and Thursday night, the Redcoats dropped a game to Southington (15-1), 67-52.

“We got off to such a bad start, then we played them almost even the next three quarters,” King said. “The first quarter killed us and we couldn’t play catchup.”

Senior Maddie Sadowski, who has played for four years, has been solid at point guard, while Brook Walker, as a junior, reached the 500-point, 500-rebound milestone and sophomore Katie Litwinko has had some big games, including a 26-point effort in a 56-33 win over Glastonbury on Jan. 3.

“We’re having a good season,” King said. “The kids in front of them left a good culture for us so it seems to be carrying on.”
